A 27-year-old police recruit with the Niagara Regional Police Service has been charged with impaired driving following a traffic stop in Aylmer last week.
According to the Aylmer Police Service, the incident happened on June 18 at approximately 11:30 p.m., when an officer on patrol observed a vehicle swerving, prompting a traffic stop on Wellington Street.
Police say there were signs the driver had been consuming alcohol. A roadside screening test was administered, which resulted in a fail.
The driver was arrested at the scene and transported to the station for further breath testing. Those tests later showed readings nearly double the legal limit.
As a result, the 27-year-old has been charged with impaired operation – 80 plus.
The matter has also been referred back to the Niagara Regional Police Service for review under its professional standards process.
