Ontario is increasing speed limits to 110 km/h on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways, including parts of Highways 401 and 416 in eastern Ontario, starting June 26th.
Transportation Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria says the change is intended to improve travel times while maintaining safety. The province says the increases will only apply to highway sections that have passed technical safety reviews.
Once fully implemented, about 89 per cent of Ontario’s highway network will have a 110 km/h limit, up from 43 per cent.
The first changes take effect June 26, with more sections of the 400-series highways expected to follow through the summer.
A portion of Hwy. 402 near St. Thomas had the speed limit increased to 110 km/hr in September of 2019 as part of a pilot project.
The project saw the highway from London to Sarnia with an increased speed limit.
The other two highway sections that served as pilots were the QEW from Hamilton to St. Catharines and the 417 from Ottawa to the Ontario – Quebec boarder.
