The Federal Government is warning residents about the possibility of another wave of Canada Revenue Agency scam calls. Elgin-Middlesex-London MP Karen Vecchio’s office has received reports of people receiving calls from someone claiming to be the CRA and informing said people that their social insurance number has been compromised.
You are being reminded to never provide your SIN to anyone who may contact you over the phone. Some tips to remember if you receive a call from someone claiming to be the CRA is that the actual CRA will never ask you for information relating to your passport, health card, or driver’s license. They will also never demand immediate payment by Interac e-transfer, prepaid credit cards, or gift cards.
A tell tale sign that the person on the other end of your phone call is a scammer is if they use aggressive language or threaten you with arrest or a prison sentence. It is also important to know that Canadians have the right to ask CRA agents for their name, phone number and office location and tell agents that they’d like to verify their identity before proceeding with the call. When in doubt of the authenticity of the call, hang up and call one of the numbers provided on the CRA’s website to insure you are speaking to an official agent.
