The St. Thomas Police Association is inviting local youth to discover the fun of fishing during its annual Youth Fishing Derby at Pinafore Park this week.
For those interested in casting a line, here’s Paul Tunks, President of the St. Thomas Police Association, with the details.
The association revived the derby last year after a break during the COVID-19 pandemic, drawing about 100 participants. Tunks says the response reinforced the importance of bringing the event back to the community.
Families don’t need to bring fishing equipment or have any previous experience. Rods, reels, tackle and lures will all be provided, with volunteers and officers on hand to help first-time anglers.
No registration is required. Participants can simply show up and enjoy the day, which also includes prizes and a free hot dog lunch courtesy of the Optimist Club.
Tunks says the derby is a great example of what community policing and partnerships look like.
For those planning to attend, Tunks has one final reminder: “Just show up. Everything will be provided, and be ready to have a fun time fishing with the police.”
