The Elgin County OPP are setting the move over law as one of their focuses this Civic Holiday long weekend. The move over law requires motorists to move over into the next available lane, slow down and proceed with caution for all ambulances, fire, police and tow trucks on the side of the road.
In rural areas where there is not an available lane to move over, the OPP ask that you slow down significantly, proceed with caution and give them as much space as possible.
OPP Constable Chad Murray says that this law is meant to reduce the number of deaths on the side of the road.
Murray says that the fine for the move over law is $400 and 3 demerit points. The OPP will also be focusing on the big four of impaired, distracted, aggressive, speeding and seatbelts.
