One candidate for a seat on city council in St. Thomas on Thursday (Aug. 7) advised he is withdrawing his nomination papers.
Doug Mactavish told myFM the reasoning for his decision.
Mactavish had originally declared he would run for the mayor’s seat at city hall.
He was the Liberal candidate in last year’s provincial election, losing out to incumbent Rob Flack.
During an all-candidates’ meeting in February of last year, Mactavish referenced the need for housing in St. Thomas.
“I commend what was done with the tiny homes (Project Tiny Hope in St. Thomas). That was creative thinking, and that’s what we need moving forward. We need to develop homes where seniors can downsize, and put up their homes for a new generation.
“We need to build homes that are under 3,000 square feet for the average family. The mansions out there are going to continue to go up. The help needs to go to young families that don’t have that first home.”
That leaves a dozen candidates vying for one of the eight councillor seats, with a deadline of Aug. 21 to file nomination papers.
