The Township of Southwold has declared a state of emergency following significant rainfall events last Sunday and Friday morning that brought more than 9 inches of rain – including 5.4 inches over a 90-minute period Friday morning – that resulted in localized flooding across the municipality.
Public Works crews are responding to changing conditions and closing roads where hazards have been identified.
Southwold Mayor Grant Jones shared an update with myFM on the current conditions.
The township is reminding drivers not to attempt to travel through flooded roadways, as water levels and conditions can change quickly.
As of 1 p.m., the following road closures were active:
- McDiarmid Line/Oneida Road, between Union Road and Fingal Line
- Hunter Line, from Bush Line to Boxall
- Bush Line, from Fingal Line to Union Road
- Fingal Line, between Oneida Road and Burwell Road
- Thomas Road, at Union Road South and Union Road North
Residents are encouraged to monitor Municipal 511 for the latest updates, as the system is updated as closures are added or removed.
Anyone who encounters a hazardous location that has not yet been barricaded is asked to contact the Township Office at 519-769-2010.
