A new addition to Pinafore Park is giving people in St. Thomas a quiet place to remember loved ones they’ve lost.
A Wind Phone has recently been installed in the Memory Garden, offering visitors a space to pause, reflect, and feel connected to someone who is no longer here.
The idea originated in Japan in 2010, when Itaru Sasaki placed a disconnected telephone in his garden as a way to feel connected to a loved one who had passed away.
Following the 2011 tsunami, the concept became a source of comfort for others experiencing grief.
The phone in Pinafore Park isn’t connected to a telephone line. Instead, visitors can pick up the receiver, dial a number, and speak to someone they miss.
The addition is being described as a gentle reminder that grief can take many forms, and that the love and memories we have for someone can continue long after they’re gone.
