With the long weekend approaching, Provincial Constable Jeff Beaumaster is reminding people to stay safe around the water following three water-related deaths in three days in neighbouring counties.
Beaumaster says the recent tragedies are an important reminder that water can be dangerous, especially for people who are not strong swimmers or are unfamiliar with local conditions.
He says anyone who does not know how to swim should avoid going into water that is deeper than they can stand in. People heading into deeper water should also use an appropriate flotation device.
Visitors are also being reminded to watch for signs and warnings at local beaches and to learn about the dangers of rip currents and other changing water conditions.
Beaumaster says knowing the risks before entering the water can help prevent a tragedy.
He also warns that when someone gets into trouble in the water, family members or friends may try to help, which could worsen the situation.
With the summer season coming to an end, Beaumaster says there may still be people heading to local beaches and spending time near the water. He encourages everyone to know their limits, pay attention to conditions, and, most importantly, learn how to swim.
