A satellite location for the St. Thomas Public Library at Memorial Arena is being put on hold for the time being. City Staff asked the Library to explore the auditorium at Memorial as a possible satellite location in the fall of 2018 to help alleviate their spacing challenges.
$72,000 in funding to operate the satellite location for a partial year in 2019 was estimated by the Library’s board, with $204,000 expected in 2020 for the location to be fully operational.
City Staff asked the Library to remove the request for funding in the 2019 budget process.
CEO Of the Library Heather Robinson says that she feels that the request to remove the funding came as the incoming council needs more information on the concept.
Robinson says that they will continue to look to use the space in the library more effectively and look for possible upgrade opportunities.
The Southern Ontario Library Service recommends a library for the population of St. Thomas to be 42,000 square feet. The library’s building is only 27,000 square feet.
