It is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month.
The Alzheimer Society of Elgin-St. Thomas is going to be making sure the residents of Elgin County get educated on Alzheimer’s and Dementia throughout January.
Public Education Coordinator with the Alzheimer Society of Elgin-St. Thomas, Maggie Scanlon says there will be multiple events taking place throughout the month.
Scanlon adds that the Society’s social media pages are kept up to date so that you can see what events are taking place and attend to get more information on how to live with dementia or ways to help someone that is dealing with dementia.
Scanlon says 1 in 4 people diagnosed with dementia doesn’t share because of stigma.
Scanlon adds that the stigma around dementia comes from people not being aware of the pain it can cause the person with the disease along with the family and friends that have to deal with the situation.
She says that support is given through the Alzheimer Society of Elgin-St. Thomas to everyone that lives in the County.
