St. Thomas is receiving $396,614 in Provincial funding to improve their transit system. Minister of Transportation Jeff Yurek has announced that a total of $364 million dollars in gas tax funding would be given to 107 municipalities that provide public transit to 144 communities across Ontario.
The funding must be used to improve the transit system and not roads or any other infrastructure.
Yurek says that he hopes that this funding will help the St. Thomas Council deliver on their campaign promise to improve transit in the City.
Yurek says that supporting public transit is important to the Provincial Government.
The funding comes from the 14.7 cents that the Provincial Government takes off of each Litre of gas sold, with 2 cents of that given back to municipalities who have a transit system.
Yurek says that their government is happy to help take some of the transit cost burdens off of municipalities in the Province.
