The province’s police watchdog has concluded its investigation into the arrest of a man who escaped an OPP prisoner transport van just north of St. Thomas.
The incident occurred May 2 of this year when a 46-year-old man was being transported to the Elgin Middlesex Detention Centre.
The man fled the vehicle when it stopped for a traffic signal in the area of Wellington Road and Hwy. 3.
He was later spotted by a motorist near Major Line, who called police.
Officers arrived and began to chase the man on foot. A short time later, the man stopped, faced the officers and put his hands up.
He was taken to hospital with two fractured ribs.
SIU Director Joseph Martino determined there were no reasonable grounds to believe that any officer committed a criminal offence in connection with the man’s arrest and injuries.
The SIU is a civilian law enforcement agency that investigates incidents involving police officers where there has been death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
