It’s Provincial Election Day in Ontario, meaning it’s your chance to cast your vote to help shape the future of Elgin-Middlesex-London and the Province.
As we prepare to cast our votes, myFM is giving a look back at our local riding’s history.
The riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London was first introduced to the region in 1996, created during the redistribution of Elgin—Norfolk, Lambton—Middlesex, and London—Middlesex ridings.
Voters in the riding are drawn from Aylmer, Bayham, Central Elgin, Dutton/Dunwich, London, Malahide, North Dorchester, Southwold, St. Thomas, Thames Centre, through to West Elgin.
Compared to federally where the riding has traditionally been “Blue”, the Liberals and Progressive Conservatives have led the riding for 3 terms each. That began in 1999 when current St. Thomas Councillor Steve Peters was elected as the Liberal representative. Peters was re-elected in 2003 and 2007 respectively, with Jeff Yurek taking over the roll beginning in 2011 before resigning his Conservative seat in February of 2022.
That brings us to today, where 8 candidates are vying for a seat in the Legislative Assembly of Ontario from Elgin-Middlesex-London.
They include Brigitte Belton who is the Ontario Party candidate, Ontario PC candidate Rob Flack, Heather Jackson with the Liberal Party, Andy Kroeker of the NDP, Malichi Male with Consensus Ontario, Matt Millar of the New Blue Ontario Party, Dave Plumb with the Freedom Party of Ontario and Amanda Stark representing the Green Party.
Don’t forget to cast your vote today!
